NEXT STEPS School to Adult Living Workshops

 

         

 

 

Five School-to-Adult Living Transition workshops will be offered to students and parents this fall. Each workshop will focus on different postsecondary outcomes identified on the students Transition Plan. Programs will address eligibility services available in the community and in the schools, student and parent roles and responsibilities in accessing those eligibility services, and tips to promote a successful transition from MCPS to adult living. The program description, including target audience and meeting details, are included below.

 

I. ADULT SERVICES

Target audience: Families of students with Individualized Education Programs age 14-21, or younger if appropriate, requiring long-term services through the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA).

Description: Representatives from state and county agencies and the school system will present information about the Maryland Transitioning Youth Initiative for eligible students with significant disabilities. Local Adult Agencies will give information regarding the services they provide to eligible graduates with significant disabilities. Timelines and steps to complete the eligibility process will be shared.

II. MONTGOMERY COLLEGE NIGHT

Target audience: Families of students with Individualized Education Programs age 14-21, or younger if appropriate, planning to attend community college, earn an associate’s degree, transfer to a four-year college or university, enter the job market, or enhance life through enrichment experience upon exiting MCPS.

Description: Representatives from Montgomery College will present an overview of the wide range of programs Montgomery College offers. Montgomery College faculty will discuss Disability Support Services, credit/non-credit programs, self-disclosure issues in the college setting and life-long learning opportunities available on the three campuses of Montgomery College.

III. POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION

Target audience: Families of students with Individualized Education Programs age 14-21, or younger if appropriate, planning to pursue college or other programs leading to a degree or career certification upon high school graduation.

Description: Representatives will discuss legislation pertinent to students with disabilities in postsecondary education settings, MCPS resources available, and planning tools to assist students transitioning to postsecondary education. Representatives from local college, university, technology schools and career certification programs will be available to meet students and discuss program offerings, admission requirements, and recommend timelines.

IV. INTEGRATED EMPLOYMENT AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Target audience: Families of students with Individualized Education Programs ages 14-21, or younger if appropriate, planning to pursue employment and/or vocational training upon high school graduation.

Description: School system representatives will share training opportunities available to students in school that prepare them for employment. Local representatives will discuss legislation pertinent to employment of individuals with disabilities, supported employment options available to eligible Montgomery County citizens, and tips to prepare students to be good employees.

V. INDEPENDENT LIVING, COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION,

CONTINUING AND ADULT EDUCATION

Target audience: Families of students age 14-21, or younger if appropriate, whose Individualized Education Programs targets independent living, community participation, and/or continuing and adult education as outcome(s) of education.

Description: School system and local representatives will share resources available to enhance the ability of individuals with disabilities to live and participate in their communities. Transportation, independent living options, recreation, leisure programs, and continuing and adult education programs will be highlighted.
