Middle School Reform Efforts Get Under Way

During this school year, five schools — Benjamin Banneker, Sligo, Roberto Clemente, Montgomery Village and Earle B. Wood — are participating in the first phase of middle school reform. Middle school reform is a three-year, $10 million effort to revamp the county's 38 middle schools.

Over the summer, teachers at these schools received additional training to assist them in boosting academic achievement. Interactive technology is also playing an important role in the classroom to enhance students' learning experiences.

Two new courses will be offered at the five schools:

  • Arts Investigation: An elective where students will engage in and analyze visual arts, dance, music and theater.
  • Information Communication Technologies: An elective that will make technology an integral part of instruction

The five schools will also offer an after-school course: "Lights, Camera, Literacy!," which connects filmmaking and text by helping students learn how to read visual text and create effective visual communications. During the course, students will work together to produce a short film.

COLLEGE BOARD STANDARDS FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS™

The College Board has published content standards for middle school and high school English Language Arts and Mathematics and Statistics. The College Board Standards for College Success define a developmental progression of rigorous learning objectives for six courses in middle school and high school that will lead all students to being prepared for AP or college-level work. The College Board has published these standards freely to provide a national model of rigorous academic content standards that states, districts, and schools may use to vertically align curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development to AP® and college readiness.
